What is SEMPO? An Explanation by Massimo Burgio from SEMPO Global
As a lot you know, dear fellow readers of the eMarketing 101 blog, for the last year or so I have been actively involved in the promotion of search marketing in Canada through the creation of SEMPO Canada: Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization in Canada. As I prepare the material for our attendance to the Massive Tech Show in Vancouver (BC) on April 01, 2008, which I invite you all to come, I was thinking it would be appropriate to share what SEMPO is and what we are doing to promote search in many countries, including our own. As such, I came across yesterday a good introduction and explanation of SEMPO made by Massimo Burgio, Chair of SEMPO Global, which SEMPO Canada is part of. He explains the advantages of becoming a member and how the organization evolved form the last 5 years. Quite interesting. Here it is:

Monique Trottier Talks about eMail Marketing & Newsletters on Lab with Leo
Here is a great clip I just caught from Work Industries blog showing Monique Trottier talking about eMail Marketing newsletters. In the 9-minute segment Monique shares with Leo her top tips for creating an effective email newsletter. And she knows what she’s talking about because she’s the force behind the Underwire newsletter: full support for non-techies. The clip was shot as part of the Lab With Leo Show:

Yahoo Canada Big Idea Chair - Interview With Gord Hotchkiss on Search
I was looking for a research from enquiro minutes ago and instead I found this great video interview with Gord Hotchkiss on Search Marketing. I think you should check out if you ever want to become a leader in the online space. This interview was made by Yahoo Canada.
What attracted my attention is when he was asked about how the mainstream media marketers are responding to search, Gord does not hesitate to mention that most people are really scared. He is using the term *crapless* and I am still trying to figure out exactly what it means but I am guessing it is not flattering. In his usual style, he does not make any favor to Canadians when on the text version of the interview, he goes on by saying that “when you get to C-Level in Canada, it is like somebody has poured maple syrup on everyone… Everything slows down”. Canada has a culture of caution, which does not work well in search. The video is only 3 minutes long and he brings you straight to the point.
Here is the text version of the interview with Gord

Video: The World According to Google
Darcy Foster from VKIstudios.com mentioned to me this morning during our monthly SEMPO Canada meeting about a great program he saw recently on the BBC channel. It is called ”The World According to Google”. Because Google still sees a phenomenal growth which leads to think that we are on a verge of another industrial revolution, you have to take the next 30 min to watch it. You can find all the links here. As a bonus, you can also see parts of the interview with John Battelle which was not broadcasted in full during the program.

SEMPO Director Dana Todd on SEMPO and the SEMPO Institute
SEMPO, the Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization, just launch a section on YouTube where they put all their videos from various sources. You will find videos there from many people sitting on the Board of Directors where they talk about SEMPO, SEMPO Institute, SEMPO Research & Marketing and all the other SEMPO committees. These are the leaders shaping the Search Engine Marketing industry worldwide and it is very inspiring to hear them speak about their respective responsibilities as part of SEMPO. I selected this one for your review, where SEMPO Director Dana Todd talks about SEMPO and the SEMPO Institute.

My friend Taron Hall has traveled extensively during the last few years and he sent me a video today of a crazy road trip he made in Africa to find the Himba Tribes. Web 2.0 Applications Help Solve our Biggest Challenges
Emanuel Krebs from ToughtPatterns.ca made an impactful post 2 days ago for the international day for the eradication of poverty, which included an easy-to-understand video on web 2.0 opportunities.
Emanuel Krebs, Blogger, ThoughtPatterns.ca
Emanuel pinpointed embarrassing stats in our humanitarian effort and what would be needed to solve major challenges in the developing world. As part of his well documented article, he mentions that whereas technology will not solve the problem, it can greatly help. As an example, GiveMeaning.com, an online fundraising site emphasizing creative fundraising ideas and other unique forms of charity donation has gained a lot of momentum in the last year. If you are not aware of GiveMeaning.com and how start ups like this one can help solve our biggest challenges, please check it out and step in.
Here is the clip on the power of Web 2.0 Applications:

BarCamp Vancouver 2007 Introduction Video
Everytime I talk about the self-organizing unconference BarCamp Vancouver and invite people to join, they have this glaze on their face. I often say, BarCamp is all about sharing and is lot of fun. Of course a lot of non-geek people would be wondering how geeky stuff can be fun, especially for a 24 hours period. I was not there for the opening “ceremony” of BarCamp Vancouver 2007 on Saturday morning but I came across this video on adhack which will give you a good idea about what it is, the energy of its people and the common passion Barcampers share. It is animated by the excellent Darren Barefoot, chief blogger: (Note: it is the second part within this video, so use the arrows as you would to select a scene)
BarCamp Vancouver will come back again next year I am sure, so stay tuned. In the meantime, feel free to check Democamp Vancouver, Artcamp Vancouver, which is next week September 08 2007, & Casecamp Vancouver.
