eMarketing 101: Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Introduction to search engine optimization:

"Companies who spend millions of dollars developing corporate Web sites are unintentionally damaging their Web site visibility in search engines, according to a study by iProspect.

The study also found that 97 percent of Fortune 100 companies use some form of technology that makes them difficult to be found by search engine users. Although about half of the Fortune 100 company Web sites include keyword META tags, the sites are unlikely to be found through keyword-based searches in the major search engines, creating a serious problem if prospective customers do not know the company's Web site address or company name."... Once your set up with pay per click search engines, you realize that search engine marketing is the best form of marketing you have ever done, no matter what size your business is or the amount of money you spend per day. You also realize that you need to keep paying for those qualified leads if you want to stay ahead of your competitors. Now, with the reporting system we have in place, you'll soon notice there's two types of traffic that's coming to your site: paid traffic, in the form of click thrus and free traffic. Free traffic can be obtained by search through a directory (Yahoo, Looksmart and DMOZ) or from  search engine results. As we want to increase the amount of free traffic to your site, here is what needs to be done:

1- Web site optimization: What is your site "theme" ?
To determine your sites "theme" we must first understand the content within its pages. Most sites content display detailed information about their products/services as well as corporate information. By analyzing all the text from every page, we can compile a list of words that are relevant to the site. Before we even submit the site, we need to make a thorough analysis of keywords page by page:

Here is an overview of all keywords that should be incorporated in each page:

  • Keywords in the <TITLE> tag(s)
  • Keywords in the <META NAME="DESCRIPTION">
  • Keywords in the <META NAME="KEYWORD">
  • Keywords in <H1> or other headline tags
  • Keywords in the <A HREF="http://yourcompany.com/page.htm"></A> link tags
  • Keywords in the body copy
  • Keywords in ALT tags
  • Keywords contained in the URL or site address, e.g., http://www.keyword.com/keyword.htm

During this process, the meta keyword and the meta description tags must be carefully optimized based on the "theme" of every page of your site. The body copy must also be optimized in order to satisfy search engine requirements.

2- Submission (Directories / search engines)
Once the site has been optimized from top to bottom, it is time to submit it. Almost all submissions should be done manually as search engines will downgrade sites that are using automatic submission tools. The major portion of traffic driven from search engines only come from the top 10 search engines.

a) Submitting to Directories:
Site submissions to Directories (Yahoo, Looksmart and DMOZ) are reviewed by humans before your site is included. Each of the directories has specific requirements for inclusion. The same applies for their ranking algorithm. Again, it is better to do it once and to do it right since you may not be able to change your listing once it is indexed in the directories.

b) Submitting to Search engines:
Submissions to search engines must be done manually. Most of them charge a small fee to include your site in their index. Their robots will then come and crawl through your site and gather all the information (keywords) they can find.

3- Link popularity
As more and more companies know about SEO, they tweak their site with the right amount of keywords so that they can improve their ranking. There is still one element that is critical for good search engine ranking: Link popularity.

Briefly, link popularity is the amount of links on the Internet directed to your sites. Not all those links have the same weight or importance and search engines are now making heavy use of link popularity in their ranking algorithm. Google is a search engine using link popularity as the major factor for its ranking algorithm. To measure your link popularity: see Marketleap.

As link popularity is "unfakable", there is no shortcut that can be taken here. Link building is a time consuming process but provides long lasting results from which you can obtain free traffic.

4- Resubmission and monitoring
Search engines only know about your progress in improving the content of your site if you resubmit it every so often. Link popularity improves over time and you want to make sure search engines know about it. Resubmission then takes place. We suggest it be done monthly.

We then need to monitor your position in search engine monthly as search engines change their ranking algorithm. As you can see, optimizing a site for long lasting results to obtain free traffic is an ongoing process.

As in the pay per click set up and maintenance, each of these steps requires special attention in order to create the desired effect. If you are new to search engines marketing, let us take care of it for you and we will save you time and money. The profit you will make will largely pay for our fee. Unlike pay per click search engines, SEO is a long process and results are not immediate. Getting free traffic for life comes with a set up fee and monthly maintenance.

Search engine optimization facts:

#1 Automated Submission Services DO NOT WORK!

The primary revenue source for most search engines and directories is advertising. Two years ago, automated submissions were working fine. Not anymore. What happened was that so many automated software users were hitting the search engines and directories and clogging up bandwidth; there were fewer eyes actually looking at the ads on the site and this caused impression inventory to go down and less availability for advertisers. Not to mention the spamming of keywords. Optimal results come from diligent submissions and accurate placements with the search engines.

#2 Top Ten Placement Requires Monthly Monitoring

Search engines and directories have algorithms or protocol that they use to determine the relevancy of a web page to the keywords a viewer types in. Think of these “algorithms” as food. Search engines send out spiders and tell them what food to look for. When a spider reaches a website, it begins by looking for the food the engine has instructed it to find. If they do not find it, or they find food that is not suppose to be there, they will rank the site very low or skip it all together. Each search engine or directory has a different set of food that their spiders (or robots) look for. They will tell the spider to look for different food every so often or even every month. We are constantly monitoring the food that the spiders (or robots) are looking for and therefore, re-optimizing our clients’ sites to ensure the food is there and remains there when the spiders go looking for it.

#3 Submission alone is not the answer.

There are several other factors that lead to a successful presence on the Internet.

  • Link popularity determines how many sites are linked to yours. This may also mean how many viewers on the actual search engine or directory click on your link. (More viewers click on the top ten).
  • Getting qualified targeted traffic to your site through strategic co-promotional opportunities.
  • Customer Relationship Management: How are you managing your visitors when they contact you?
